2020 Nerd Christmas Gift Guide: Wrap Indigo’s PlumPlus Membership And Put It Under The Christmas Tree

Odds are you have at least one impossible reader on your gift list this Christmas. We all have them and if you’re a member of the Nerd community, you probably have more than you can shake a stick at. And there may not be a more impossible person to find a gift for than an avid reader.

Book tastes can be very subjective. Almost nightmarishly so. Even if you find something you think your tough-to-buy for reader might take like (usually after spending hours of browsing, sampling and Googling), how do you know they haven’t read it already? How do you know it isn’t already sitting in an ever growing to-be-read pile? How do you know they won’t be standing in the returns line on Boxing Day, the book you spent hours agonizing over destined to wind up back on the same shelf you found it?

Sure, you could just give them a gift card, but can you put anything more impersonal beneath a Christmas Tree or in a stocking? So what if you got them something that not only made book shopping easier, but rewarded them the more they read?

Enter Indigo’s PlumPlus program.

PlumPlus isn’t new. Canada’s biggest book retailer rolled it out a few years ago to replace their long time iRewards discount plan. While it is a little more expensive than its predecessor, PlumPlus gives you more benefits, especially for avid readers and loyal shoppers.

While the iRewards program gave members 10% off books, it only gave them 5% off other eligible merchandise. PlumPlus gives you the 10% across the board, granting you the discount on books, giftware, toys, games and even candy. Of course there are a few exceptions (aren’t there always?); Lego, American Girl, Jellycat and electronic product don’t get the discount. Nor do Casper pillows (seriously, who spends a hundred bucks on a pillow?), but the 10% comes off everything else, including stuff already on sale.

While Indigo’s current cutoff for free online shipping is thirty-five dollars, PlumPlus gives you free shipping on almost all online orders (something that comes in handy during a global pandemic). If you order a stroller online your still going to be forking over a few bucks, but if it’s books or toys or dishes, Indigo picks up the tab for the stamps. PlumPlus can get you free shipping to your home on purchases as low as a couple bucks.

And you’ll still get points for every dollar you spend. Meaning that on top of the 10% discount, every once is awhile you’ll have five or ten dollars waiting to be saved. You can even collect up to a hundred bucks worth of points depending on your patience and ambition.

Indigo is even experimenting with early access to sales and making some promotions PlumPlus (and regular Plum) exclusive. Those experiments likely starting with this upcoming Black Friday..

So what does this all have to do with Christmas? Well now you can buy a PlumPlus membership for someone else as well as yourself. So in case you can’t find a book to put under the tree this or any Christmas, you can gift wrap a PlumPlus card for that stubborn reader. Let them choose their own gifts while enjoying the perks of the program you got them. We hate to use the phrase “the gift that keeps on giving,” but it kind of is.

PlumPlus is available for 39 dollars a year and can be purchased both in store and online.
