Free Comic Book Day In Ottawa

It’s that time of year again.

Free Comic Book Day is upon us once again. And this year publishers are going all out with over 50 free books for your comic collecting pleasure.

From Marvel and DC to Image and IDW to companies you’ve never even heard of, there are plenty of publishers taking advantage of one of North America’s biggest cultural events. With this year’s day falling on May the 4th-also known as International Star Wars Day-things will be even more interesting.

And Ottawa’s comic book stores have got you covered.

The Comic Book Shoppe (228 Bank St. and 1400 Clyde Ave.) will be discounting trade paperbacks by twenty percent while also offering fifty percent off all back issues. Both locations are also sure to have special deals of the day specific to each location as well. The Shoppe is also known for having a great collection of cosseted visits and guests to enhance your Free Comic Book Day experience.

Not to be outdone, Myths, Heroes and Legends (just down the street at 256 Bank St.) will also be offering all their wall books and back issues at twenty percent off while discounting individual trade paperbacks from thirty to fifty percent. But if your interested in picking up multiple trades, you can get a third one free after the purchase of two. And in case you find anything you like in their dollar bin, well today you can get ten one dollar books for only five bucks. Plus they’ll be offering a generous fifty percent discount on select book sets.

Comet Comics meanwhile (1073 Bank St.) will be using Free Comic Book Day to show off their (slightly) new digs down the stairs from Black Squirrel Books and Espresso. They’ll have the full selection of free titles with a reasonable limit of five per person (so watch the sticky fingers).

All stores open at 10 AM.

After being proposed by industry columnist Joe Field in 2001, Free Comic Book Day began in 2002 and has seen tens of millions of books distributed by thousands of independent retailers across North America, Europe and Asia. Held on the first Saturday in May and usually coinciding with the release of a major comic-themed summer blockbuster (like say, a little known movie called Avengers), Free Comic Book Day has been credited with helping the industry recover from the near fatal sales bust of the late nineties.

It has been so successful that Diamond Distributing (the world’s largest comic book distributor) spun off a Halloween equivalent in 2013 called Halloween ComicFest.
