Free Comic Book Day In the Nation’s Capital

Free Comic Book Day is here once again, and we’ve done a quick roundup of everywhere in the Nation’s Capital that’s offering activities sales and other assorted nerd goodness.

Free Comic Book day has grown from a promotional strategy into a full fledged cultural phenomenon. There’s a good reason Marvel usually releases their big summer blockbuster on this weekend (though we were treated to Avengers: Infinity War a week early to prevent Europe from filling the Internet with spoilers). And this year various publishers will be offering 50 free comics supporting new titles, projects and series.

Just a reminder before we dive into the buffet of goodies Ottawa stores will be offering to go along with this year’s free books, while these may be free for the consumer, stores still have to pay for them. So don’t be greedy and make sure you leave plenty for others

You can check out the free titles and the publishers offering them here.

If your headed downtown, Heroes, Myths and Legends (located upstairs at 256 Bank St.) will be offering 20% off back issues (excluding consignment product) and up to 50% off select statues and toys. Previously discounted trade paperbacks will be be further reduced while you can buy two regular priced trades and get the third one free. There will also be additional specials on dollar bin and discount boxes as well.

And while neither of The Comic Book Shoppes (228 Bank St. and 1400 Clyde Ave.) may be offering huge sales on top of their fee books, you can use Free Comic Book Day to wet your whistle for their annual Midnight Madness sale the following weekend. On May 12th, both stores will re-open at 8 PM and nearly everything will be on sale until midnight (with some discounts going as deep as 75%) Just in time for Ottawa Comic-Con.

If your a little further south of downtown, make sure to check out Comet Comics (1167 Bank St.) to see what they’ll be offering. And if you’re in in east end, drop into the The House of Leisure (located in the St. Laurent Shopping Centre) to see what treats they’ll have in store for their first Free Comic Book Day.

As a cherry on top, Star Wars and robotics fans will definitely want to check out their local Indigo and Chapters stores. May 5th is droid day, where participants can assemble and control their own R2-D2. There will also be some Star Wars themed paper crafts as well (for those of us who aren’t in there droid design know).

And don’t be surprised to see your comic book retailer of choice offering some last minute deals and unadvertised store specials.
