Cartoon Constantine

DC’s Popular Trench Coat Wearing Warlock Is Back

The CW is resurrecting Constantine as an online animated television show on their CW Seed platform. There has been a growing demand to bring the show back since NBC cancelled it following it’s lone 13 episode season in 2015 (the show premiered a week before Halloween in 2014 and concluded February 13th, 2015. NBC officially cancelled it that May, citing poor ratings). After CBS moved Supergirl to the CW-where it joined a number of DC’s other televised properties-there was hope that Constantine might find new life there as well.

Those hopes were fuelled further when actor Matt Ryan (whose portrayal of the cynical, snarky British occultist with the razor wit and roguish charm was a hit with fans and critics alike) reprised the role for a guest spot on Arrow during its fourth season. The enthusiastic response of that appearance along with the excitement caused by the announcement that Ryan would voice John Constantine in the upcoming animated JLA: Dark movie convinced the CW to grant Constantine a second lease on televised life.

Based on DC’s Hellblazer comic, Constantine will join other animated DC comics book properties Vixen as well as the upcoming Freedom Fighters: The Ray on CW’s The Seed. Ryan will voice Constantine. In related news, the CW also recently renewed all four shows in its “Arrowverse”-Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

As of yet no release date for Constantine has been announced. JLA: Dark will be released for streaming January 24th and will hit Blu-ray and DVD shelves February 7th.
