Batman was a Green Lantern?!

Batman, billionaire Kung Fu Master who can take out Superman without having any superpowers… What happens when Batman becomes a Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan? You get ‘Batman: In Darkest Knight‘.

Published in 1994, written by Mike W. Barr with art by Jerry Bingham, ‘Batman: In Darkest Knight’ tells the story in which Bruce Wayne becomes the Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan. This one change creates a domino effect that alters events and characters all throughout the DC Universe.

Review/Summary: (SPOILERS!!!!)

The comic starts off like any other Batman storyline begins – he watches his parents get killed in front of his own eyes. After his first attempt at becoming the vigilante he is destined to become, he pleads to his deceased father after his first attempt had gone horribly wrong. Sitting in his study, wounded, a ghostly image comes from a bust before him, telling him that he has been chosen. The figure heals his wounds and leads him to a crashed rocket on his property. Inside, the dying Green Lantern Abin Sur gives Bruce his power ring and tells him to wait for contact from its masters. Bruce hides the rocket in the Batcave beneath his mansion and begins his crimefighting career.

With this new power of the Lantern, Bruce is able to stop the Red hood from falling into the vat of chemicals and becoming the Joker. I had to put the comic down to take a minute to think what Batman would be without the Joker… I couldn’t imagine it.

Without spoiling the entire comic, I can say that this felt more like a Green Lantern comic than a Batman comic. It was missing all the dark and gritty things that we love about Batman. It is a good read but this would not be our first suggestion for the best Batman comic.
