Nintendo has announced some big news today! Unfortunately it wasn’t the big news you were waiting for: more details on the company’s newest console, the NX. Instead, today’s Nintendo Direct detailed a slew of new titles for the Nintendo 3DS. Rumors have been dropped that the newest Nintendo console, the NX plans on replacing both Nintendo’s console and handheld lines, meaning the 3DS days are coming to an end. Fear not 3DS owners, rest assured knowing they’ll have some great games to play in the system’s final months.
Speaking of Nintendo systems in their final months, a pair of high-profile Wii U games are being resurrected on the 3DS. The acclaimed Super Mario Maker is receiving a slightly pared-down port on December 2 (which I am happy about as this was one of the only reason I contemplated buying a Wii U). The 3DS version will not allow for online sharing but players can still create courses and download new ones online.
Yoshi’s Woolly World is also coming to 3DS on February 3, 2017. While the 3DS version will lose the HD visuals that made the Wii U version’s handmade world such a visual masterpiece, the 3DS version will come with a small collection of new stop-motion shorts. There will also be new stages centered around Yoshi’s canine companion Poochy, and a yarn Poochy amiibo is in the works.
As for original games, Pikmin is making its first appearance on a handheld in 2017 (ABOUT TIME!). The 3DS Pikmin drops the franchise’s real-time strategy gameplay for a 2D, sidescrolling perspective. However, based on the footage it looks like players will still have to think tactically and use Pikmin’s unique abilities to overcome obstacles. Im unsure about the decision but we will have to wait and see how it turns out. Speaking of Pikmin, Shigeru Miyamoto has been teasing a fourth Pikmin for months, but most assumed it would be a Wii U game. Has it been changed to a NX launch?
Fun Fact: Did you know Nintendo calls independent games on its platforms Nindies? New Nindies are dropping every week in September, and although some have already appeared on other platforms, that just means we already know how good they are.
We are hoping that Nintendo finally releases us some CONFIRMED news about the NX soon! While more and more and more rumours are appearing, more and more fan mock-up designs have been appearing all over the internet. We all just want your new Zelda game Nintendo, were not asking that much!
