IT WAS A BUSY WEEKEND OF AWESOME NEWS. LET’S GET STARTED
This year’s San Diego Comic Con was the usual mouth watering buffet of announcements for upcoming movies, TV shows, video games and even a few comic books. While things heated up on Friday, Saturday was a veritable machine gun of nerd goodness, cranking out juicy news and trailers like red-hot bullets. To help you keep on top of it, here’s a quick run down of some of the bigger announcements and reveals from Comic Con 2016.
Prepare for a serious case of Nerd shivers.
We all knew Marvel’s Netflix universe was going to get a lot bigger and now we have some more details to round that picture out. Marvel dropped the first official trailer for the Luke Cage Netflix show scheduled for release September 30. The show will follow Cage’s travels after he left Hell’s Kitchen during season one of Jessica Jones. Marvel also offered a quick peek at the new Iron Fist show starring Finn Jones, though it didn’t confirm a date for the show’s debut. It’s safe to assume it should be available before the release of The Defenders.

And speaking of The Defenders, The House of Ideas offered a teaser for the highly anticipated Netflix team up show, confirming it should begin filming later this year or very early next and is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2017. Marvel also revealed that they have renewed their flagship Netflix show Daredevil for a third season and Jessica Jones for a second. Exact release dates for those shows weren’t released and Marvel offered no additional details on the previously confirmed Punisher solo series.

But don’t think that Marvel forgot about its big screen blockbusters. On Saturday it offered a sneak peek at the gladiator armour the Hulk will be sporting in Thor Ragnarok (opening November 3rd, 2017). Anyone whose interest hasn’t been peaked by the mighty Asgardian’s third and final solo movie is probably paying attention now. Marvel also released a second trailer for this fall’s Doctor Strange (November 4th), tossed a few teasers for next May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 on the rumour fire (including the possible identity of Star Lord’s father), revealed which villain Black Panther will face in his solo movie in February 2018 (Erik Killmonger) and confirmed Brie Larsen will be playing Captain Marvel in her solo movie scheduled to hit theatres in July of 2018.
Marvel’s Distinguished Competition was also plenty busy at this year’s Con. On Friday they showed off a new poster for next June’s Wonder Woman stand alone movie, kicking off what is likely to be a year long promotional campaign for the Amazon’s solo cinematic debut. Then they followed that up on Saturday with an actual trailer that almost set the Internet on fire. With buzz building about next month’s Suicide Squad and the direct to DVD release The Killing Joke, DC and Warner Brothers seem to be moving past the messy reception Batman Vs. Superman got back in March.

And speaking of Batman and Superman . . . DC surprised audiences by teasing some footage from their first Justice League movie (due November 17, 2017). It was brighter and more upbeat then BvS, Batman didn’t kill anyone and there was even a joke. This prompts the question, was this movie made by the same people responsible for the polarizing Batman Vs. Superman? If so, it looks like they may have learned a lesson or two.

While we’re on the topic of Wonder Woman, she was front and center in the trailer for DC’s Injustice 2 video game. The trailer was heavy on eye-popping visuals but light on story details, but while Superman was the world-conquering tyrant in the first Injustice, it looks as though Diana may fill that role in the sequel. And like the original, DC will publish a comic to fill in the story gaps prior the game’s release. The book will be distributed digitally with print versions to follow. Both are scheduled for 2017 release but no specific dates have been announced.

Does anyone else remember how awesome Justice League Unlimited was back in the day? Well buckle up because DC announced a new Justice League cartoon show- Justice League Action-that will feature the return of fan favourite voice actors Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (The Joker). Episodes will run around eleven to fifteen minutes in length and feature a rotating cast of heroes. No word when we can expect it.

And while you might think Warner Bros. had its hands full with it’s DC properties, it didn’t miss the opportunity to push other, non-super hero movies coming out next year as well. After dropping a brand new trailer for this November’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for next February’s Lego Batman (after the success of 2014’s Lego Movie, WB is creating an entire animated Lego universe with multiple franchises) and it released the first trailers for Kong Skull Island and Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (both due next March).

There was even something for Star Trek fans as CBS finally tipped its hand about its new Star Trek series premiering next January. Star Trek Discovery will be taking place in the “Prime Star Trek Universe,” or more plainly, the timeline that William Shatner’s Captain Kirk inhabits along with Captains Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko and Catherine Janeway. Bell Media has acquired the Canadian rights for Star Trek Discovery, and after airing the premier episode on the CTV network the remaining episodes will be shown on the Space Channel in English markets and the Z channel in French ones.

In an ingenious promotional slight of hand, Lionsgate Entertainment screened a horror movie titled The Woods for an audience at Comic Con that turned out to be a third film in the Blair Witch series. The wily gamble paid off as the film received strong reviews and plenty of free publicity for its September 16 release.

And its now official, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is returning. Relentless fan demand and one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in recent memory has resurrected the cult favourite, which will debut on Netflix sometime in 2017.
That should tide everyone until Comic Con 2017. It’s going to be an awesome year.
