It’s no secret that this Christmas is going to be a little different than most. Calling it challenging is likely the understatement of the millennium.
Here at the Nerd is The Word, we’ll be doing our annual Christmas toy drive a little differently this year (the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is being extremely selective and cautious accepting any donations this year, turning many aside. And Toy Mountain may not even be a thing in Ottawa this year), but there will still be a Nerd Is The Word Toy Drive and the Nerdmas Tree will be back, complete with new ornaments to show off.
But we’re going to try and do our part. Between now and the holidays, we will be doing our Nerd Is The Word 2020 Christmas Gift Guide, giving you a heads up on things and events that may make your 2020 Yuletide shopping a little easier. Because if there’s anything we need the rest of 2020 to be, it’s a little easier.
In fact we’ve already started. Just a few days ago we published a piece recommending the first season of the CW’s Stargirl if you needed to put something optimistic and naively fluffy in someone’s stocking.Â
But we’re not just going to push stuff you can find on Amazon or at your local Walmart. One thing 2020 has done is proven how many creative souls live right next door and how technology allows those individuals, once at the mercy of a global marketplace that had no room for creativity or originality, to turn all seven billion plus souls on the planet into potential customers.
We’re going to do our best to offer a mix. Sure we’ll have a selection of mass market items you might find interesting (like Stargirl: Season One). But we also hope to introduce you to something new by some Ottawa based artists spreading their wings. And if you don’t hail from Canada’s National Capital region, please feel free to introduce yourself and anyone from your neck of the woods.
We’ll do our best to introduce you to the world and we can always use some new friends. Especially this year.
Like everything else in 2020, Christmas is going to be a lot different than previous years. 2021’s Yuletide season could be as well. And while those challenges may invite a lot of pessimism and cynicism, we can still find plenty of ways to enjoy the Holidays. And finding new ways to enjoy our passions while reaching out to new people along the way may be the best way to celebrate Christmas, 2020 or not.
So get those letters to Santa ready. And leave out plenty of Oreos.
