Looking for some fun Monday night? Hoping to support a great cause at the same time?
Then look no further than the Sip N’ Play night at Funhaven amusement centre (located at 1050 Baxter Rd.).
Organized by Speak Up Ottawa, Sip N’ Play aims to raise both funds and awareness for The Interval House Ottawa, a shelter for abused and assaulted women.
Interval House has been operating in Ottawa since 1976 and offers a variety of services to both women fleeing abusive situations and their children or dependants. Interval estimates it has helped over 3200 women (and over 7000 people total) since opening. The IHO offers transitional housing, a wide variety of counselling services aimed at both women and vulnerable youth as well as access to a vast support network including legal and educational references). The IHO also supports a 24/7 crisis hotline and is the only service of its kind in Ottawa that also accepts pets.
Speak Up Ottawa is a campaign organized by Alqonguin College public relations students to raise money and awareness for Interval House. It is part of a larger initiative that Algonquin launched over 20 years ago, where students support various community programs and charities in an effort to contribute to the community and gain practical experience. It is estimated the program has raised over 400,000 dollars for Ottawa programs.
Sip N’ Play will enjoy a private area at Funhaven while ticket holders will have access to a live DJ and private bar. Speak Up has also arranged some promotional tie ins with Uber, Lyft and even OC Transpo, while there will also be door prizes donated by local businesses to be raffled off or won through a silent auction (The Nerd Is The Word.ca donated a small Indigo gift card for you book lovers).
