Merry Christmas!
OK, maybe Merry Nerdmas would be more appropriate. Because April of 2019 may as well be Christmas 2.0 for Nerds (or Christmas: The Prequel if you prefer).
There may not be another month this year full of such Nerdy goodness.
The fun gets off to a chilling bang with the new Twilight Zone (produced by rising star Jordan Peele). CBS has been slowly building the hype for this one ever since dropping the first teaser during the Super Bowl. And given Peele’s escalating street cred among nerds and genre fans alike, the latest incarnation of one of TV’s most popular and enduring franchises could be a cornerstone for CBS moving forward. While the new ‘Zone will only be available on the CBS Access streaming service in the U.S. (as of April 1st), it will premiere on City TV north of the border April 4th.
And while we’re talking about the small screen, let’s not forget that the long awaited and final season of a little show called Game of Thrones will be unleashed on an unsuspecting world April 14th. Given the hype around this season and the brutal wait we’ve all been forced to endure since season seven came to a cliffhanging close almost two years ago, HBO should look forward to record annihilating ratings for the final six GoT episodes. Seriously, we could be talking last episode of M.A.S.H, who-shot-JR, royal wedding numbers. And in the thousand channel, streaming service landscape, that’s no small miracle.
In case you’re a fan of Dreamwork’s She-Ra and The Princesses of Power revival, Netflix will drop season 2 April 26th. It looks as though they’re following the same formula that made their recently concluded Voltron reboot such a hit. Every six months or so, fans of the new show can look forward to new “mini-season” of six episodes each. Enough to complete entire story arcs while keeping the show both fresh for existing fans and accessible for new ones.
For sci-fi fans, both Start Trek Discovery and The Orville will wrap up their second seasons tis month. While both shows found loyal and passionate audiences in their first season, its fair to say each has been polarizing to say the least. But its also fair to say that each has stepped up its respective game during their sophomore campaigns.
While we’re on the subject of Netflix, the streaming giant is debuting the new psychological horror series Chambers the same day. Starring Uma Thurman, Chambers could become another one of Netflix’s original streaming hits along the lines of Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House. And considering they could be in for the fight of their lives later this fall when Disney+ launches, they’re going to need all the help they can get.
In case you plan on heading to the Cineplex, April has got you spoiled there as well. The months starts off with DC’s Shazam! (already a hit with critics) on April 5th and and ends with Avengers: Endgame (which likely earn enough money its first weekend to buy Texas) April 26th. Sandwiched in between will be Hellboy, Pet Semetary, The Missing Link and The Curse of La Llorna.
In case video games are your nerd poison of choice, you’ll want to circle April 23rd on your calendar. That’s when Mortal Kombat 11 for Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One and PS4 hits game shelves. While there are a handful of other video game titles released in April, this is the big one and could be one of the top selling titles of the year.
If April were any kinder to us Nerds, we’d need to put up a tree and hang stockings by the fire with care.
