Geek Girl #1

A heads up, there will be SPOILERS in this review! If you don’t want any of the story to be spoiled but are interested in the comic CLICK HERE!

When “Little Miss Popular” Ruby Kaye lands a pair of super-tech glasses (invented by brainiac college geek Trevor Goldstein) in a game of Strip Poker, she’s granted flight, super-strength, and – due to a flaw in the glasses’ programming – super klutziness! And this is just the beginning of changes the glasses will wreak on Ruby!

One of my favorite parts of this comic is revealing that even with super powers, Ruby still manages to be portrayed as human. Ruby quickly learns how important a secret identity is to functioning in a world where both heroes and villains exist and the struggles that follow with maintaining it. What would happen if you suddenly got powers? Would you be upfront with everyone about it or would you contain your powers and create a new identity?

While the overall pace of the comic moves the story along fairly quickly, I found that there were a few conversation pieces that slowed it down enough for us to get to learn more about the characters and their personal traits. While some may not enjoy the drop in pace, I personally like to get invested into the character if I plan on continuing the series!

The first chapter does a very good job of setting up things that will take place in future issues. without giving away the main plot, by the end of the first chapter Ruby is seeking revenge on someone!

In the end, I found myself asking the question “What would I be doing in Ruby’s situation?” To be honest I don’t think I would be able to hide my powers for very long. What consequences would this bring to my life? Well, luckily I will never have to find this out – but Ruby seems to have handled it quite well…. for now at least!

If you are interested in finding out more about Geek-Girl be sure to check out their website! Their comic is now available on Amazon – click here to go check it out. Thank you again to Sam Johnson for providing us with a review copy – we will be checking out chapter 2 in the near future!

Overall I really enjoyed this comic. There isn’t many comics out there that put you in a situation you can relate to and this was quite refreshing. I’m looking forward to checking out chapter 2!
