Wow… Retro gaming is becoming a massive market. Coming off the heels of Nintendo’s “Classic NES” announcement last week Sega is jumping back into console gaming as well. Sega will release the Sega Mega Drive, in the coming months.
The Classic NES and the Sega Mega Drive are totally different. The Classic NES will release 30 built in games, have HDMI connection and allow you to use old controllers. The Mega Drive, however will boast a whopping 80 games, have a wireless controller, but not be HDMI compatible.
As cool as the nearly double amount of games are, it seems that unlike the NES, where I love and would often play close to all of the games, Sega’s system has a large number of throw away titles. Its seems more like the old 100 in 1 game cartridges that the original NES had.

One thing that the Mega Drive does have on its competition is the ability to play old cartridges, this is AMAZING sadly not all because of the limited technological capabilities. Sega is also releasing a handheld version. All of this to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their mascot Sonic.
No word yet as to the actual release date or North American prices… so stay tuned for updates as the come!
