Move over, Steve Rogers!  There’s a new Cap in town.

Captain Marvel, to be specific. In a Variety exclusive, we’ve learned the final draft pick for the newest Avenger is none other than Scott Pilgrim’s Brie Larson. After taking a Best Actress Oscar home earlier this year, it’s a match made in superhero heaven!

Larson has proven talents in a leading role, with a film and music career spanning almost two decades. Her latest work includes appearances as the level-headed sister in Trainwreck and abduction survivor/World’s Best Mom in 2015’s Room.

Captain Marvel – the quirky blonde Superman of the Marvel comics universe – has yet to make an appearance on the silver screen, and is unknown to non-comic readers. For those of you who prefer movies to comics – no judgment, but SHAME – here’s a quick run down on the legendary Marvel character Larson may be taking on:

  • Her real name is Carol Danvers;
  • She’s an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with an alien;
  • Her powers include flight, superhuman strength, and harnessing the power of a LITERAL WHITE HOLE;
  • Known by multiple names, including Ms. Marvel and Binary, but was the seventh (and most popular) character to don the name Captain Marvel.

Extra Fun Facts With Amy: In a 1977 comic issue, Carol Danvers fought for equal pay for equal work in her civilian identity!

Although Marvel has yet to comment on the announcement, sources at Variety state that Larson is the frontrunner to play the Captain in an upcoming solo movie. Although the film won’t hit theatres for a few years, we’re expecting a first look at Carol Danvers in the Avengers saga long before shooting for Captain Marvel wraps, following in the footsteps of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spiderman.

There’s been a lot of talk about casting among Marvel fans, and we may finally have a look at the newest face of the Avengers franchise. Do you think Brie Larson would fit in with the likes of your favourite Marvel heroes? Let us know your thoughts.

The current scheduled release date for Captain Marvel is March 8, 2019.
