Local Spotlight: Throne of Games

Greg Shingler: Hello, everyone. This is Greg Shingler/NinjaBateman from Thenerdistheword.ca and today I am joined by Eric Cameron; whom is the owner and operator of Throne of Games located here in Ottawa. Hey, Eric how’s it going?

Eric Cameron: Yo!

G.S: So first off can you tell us a bit about your business?

E.C: Well I’ve been buying and selling games for about 5-6 years now, but just 2 years ago I actually made a satire ad for a competitor;  the joke business that I used was Throne of Games. When I made that satire ad I got hundreds of responses about what I said. I had the website throneofgames.ca for the ad and people were telling me they tried to visit the site but it wasn’t there. They thought it was a real business and things kept going from there.

G.S: That’s cool. So, how exactly did you get started with everything? You said you made a satire ad out of nowhere?

E.C: I made the satire ad and there was so much craze about it that I just realized I could really take it somewhere. The name and concept were really sweet; then I remembered I had been collecting broken stuff for years. I had nothing to do with it, it was just piling up and was basically useless. I thought about building a throne of games with all my broken stuff and what a great symbol that could be.

G.S: There ya go. Now you said earlier you have been doing this for..was it 6 years?
E.C: About 5-6 years, most of that just on Kijiji. When I first started there was practically no one on Kijiji buying games, I was the only top ad. However, competition started to ramp up so I had to step up my game. I couldn’t just continue meeting up with people in parking lots; I needed a business to stand behind, so I created a website telling all potential customers what I’m about in hopes of getting more credibility.

1G.S: In regards to your business. What exactly do you buy? New games, old games? Video game tech, working, broken etcetera?

E.C: I buy games and consoles for over 30 different platforms from original Nintendo to PS4. I even buy the items that come in broken to continue collecting materials to build the Throne of Games.

G.S: Now will you be attending next year’s Comic-Con? I know we didn’t see you there this year but, what about in the future?

E.C: Well I definitely want to get the Throne built and take that everywhere I can including Comic-Cons. I think it will be epic; who wouldn’t want to get their photo taken while sitting on the Throne of Games!

G.S: Yes. I think that would be a huge hit! Now, what will you do after the Throne is built? I know you mentioned you would take it places but, will you keep going with your business?

E.C: Oh absolutely! It’s just a symbol, I want to show people I’m really passionate about video games. I love video games, loved them my whole life and hope to continue doing this as long as I can. I always wanted to be a video game tester when I was a kid. I didn’t know I would be testing the old video games. I kinda thought I’d be testing new ones. But I got my wish in the end.

G.S: Awesome! Now one last question, Eric. Is there any additional information you would like to share to any potential guests, customers or visitors?

E.C: Yeah. I think my prices are the best and I offer the best service. And if you don’t think that’s true…let me know so, I can improve (laughs).

G.S: (laughs) Yes, I can certainly vouch for that. Now if you could just state for the record your name and your official website as well as any additional links to your business.

E.C: My name is Eric Cameron and my website is www.throneofgames.ca. I’m also on facebook under The Throne of Games.

G.S: Excellent! Thank you very much for your time, Eric! We appreciate your time!

E.C: Thanks! Take care!
