Star Wars is one of the most amazing movies that were ever made. A ton of artists created this beautiful sequence of images. The costumes of all movies are highly elaborated and every stitch is overthought and developed in a long period of planning. Our nerdy breath is just taken away by how amazing and beautiful the outcome of the designer, actors, light, sound effects and scenery is. Not to mention the story. I felt like The Nerd Is The Word was the best blog to share one of my posts about movie costumes. I’m a costume designer based in Germany, sharing my inspiration around the world.
Let’s have a closer look on the Costume Design Process
Queen Amidala wore the most beautiful and stunning dresses (ok, she became a queen, what did you expect?). Queen Amidala, played by Natalie Portman, had in my point of view the most overwhelming costumes. I found this video describing and showing the details of costume making for the movie. You get a feeling of how extensive the work is and how many artists are being needed to create something wonderful, but unfortunately short, movie. Have a closer look here:
For all you Star Wars Fans I recommend the book Dressing A Galaxy by Trisha Biggar. Also the book Star Wars – Costumes – The original Trilogy is a good read (or better watch) for inspiration and history behind every character costume.
I love seeing every detail and the used fabrics from a closer look. I know that we’re not able to touch the fabrics, but at least seeing them from a very near distance makes the imagination process much better. In Munich, Germany we have this great exhibition starting on the 14th of May: Star Wars Identities. You are able to get to know your own identity better and to find out on which side you belong. All that is combined with lectures of psychology lectures once a week and a mind quiz to get to know your self better. I think the combination of both art, movie characters and psychology makes this exhibition very exciting. To see all original costumes and scene drawings from near distance is even more amazing. I’ll definitely visit the exhibition the next week and will keep you on track on my blog. See you there!
Love,
Luzia
